Writing Through the Arts
The Writing Through the Arts Program is a collaboration between the CAPA Creative Writing Department and the CAPA Art Department. The goal of this collaboration is to bring the written word to life through the visual arts. This program began in the 2010 - 2011 Academic Year with a trip to the Brooks Museum of Art in the fall followed by a second trip to the Dixon Gallery and Gardens in the spring. On these trips, writers and artists had the opportunity to meet and collaborate to work on their craft in a museum setting. Touring the exhibits and working on the grounds of these two museums served to inspire the work of writers and artists alike. Last year's collaboration resulted in a piece ("Human Mind" by Savannah Smith and Madison Petri) being exhibited in the Dixon Gallery and Gardens' spring exhibition "Made in Dixon".
The 2011 - 2012 Academic Year began with a kick off trip back to the Dixon Gallery and Gardens during which writers and artists were able, once again, to collaborate in the museum setting to begin work on their pieces for exhibition in the spring. An additional component added to the collaborative efforts for this year is a Book Making Project. Jami Hooper is a CAPA Art teacher with a specialty in book making. Angela Thomas is a student in her program who garnered a Gold Key in the Scholastic Art and Writing Competition for her sculptural book. With their guidance, the written word will be brought to life in books of artistic beauty and relevance to the theme of the work.
